Episode 28: An InDesign Inventory, Part 2 (VIDEO)

September 3rd, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

Picking up right where Part 1 left off, this episode concludes my InDesign Inventory of features put to work in the design of a 256-page magazine. In two more examples, I cover working with Master Pages and Document Pages simultaneously, and deconstruct how … (read more)

A New Milestone

August 31st, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

The subscriber base has now climbed past the 4000 mark as of Episode 26, and Episode 27 seems to be following hot on the heels of that number. I keep getting e-mails from new listeners, and the number of reviews posted on the iTunes Music Store now exceeds the number of episodes I’ve created.

This is a real thrill for me, and I thank everyone out there for their continued support, enthusiasm and feedback. Now let’s see how long it takes to reach 5000.

Episode 27: An InDesign Inventory, Part 1 (VIDEO)

August 20th, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

When you design 4 full-page ads, 19 charts and graphs, and 123 page layouts in 24 working days, you really see how InDesign’s features make a big project much more manageable. Having just completed a 256-page magazine, I decided that this episode would take inventory of some of the ways that InDesign … (read more)

Record High

August 3rd, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

No…I’m not talking about the temperature here in New York (which is freakin’ unbearable). The record high I mean is the number of downloads for the podcast. In April, the number of downloads per episode was 1000. It doubled in July, and less than a month later it has reached a new all-time high. Episode 25 was downloaded more than 3000 times so far. Once again, I have to thank everyone for the support and feedback for the podcast. I hope there are now 3000 designers out in the world who are realizing the benefits of working smarter in the application and finding the time every day to experiment and do better work.

The InDesigner Gets Published

August 3rd, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

My writing debut (other than this blog) is now available in the current issue of InDesign Magazine (#13 – August/September 2006). I wrote three sidebars for Adam Pratt’s Top Ten Bridge Tips for InDesign Users article. The sidebars cover real-world examples of how I use Bridge in combination with InDesign to improve and streamline my magazine’s workflow. If you’re a subscriber, check it out. If you’re not, you can enter “theindesigner” in the promo code box when subscribing online to get a special deal.

Front Page News (and Rave Reviews)

July 30th, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

I just checked the main “Technology” page of the iTunes Music Store’s podcast section, and guess who’s podcast is right up there with the likes of Leo LaPorte’s “This Week in Tech” and the Diggnation podcast? It’s me! And not only that…The InDesigner is now number 60 in the Top 100 Subscribed Technology Podcasts, and is just about to reach 3000 subscribers … (read more)

24 Days, 123 Page Layouts, 19 Charts & Graphs, 4 Full-page Ads…

July 30th, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

…and zero podcasts, unfortunately.

The title of this post represents my work in the last issue of my magazine, which was 256 pages, plus covers. This doesn’t leave a ton of time for writing and producing podcasts, unfortunately. And it requires a little time to rest and recover. So, if you haven’t already missed me, now you know why you should.

I’m hard at work getting a new episode in just under the wire for July, and then back on schedule for August — which will have many new and interesting things in store for you, my loyal audience.

Text Wrap Preferences

July 21st, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

A subscriber who watched Episode 23 (Practicing Safe Output) was trying to follow my advice by moving objects with transparency to lower layers to avoid rasterization issues. But he was experiencing unwanted text wrap changes. He e-mailed me saying:

“Moving text to another layer above the Default layer overrides the text wrap applied to the image on the Default layer.”

Actually, it only does that if InDesign’s text wrap preferences are set the way they work in QuarkXPress (where only the objects below get affected by the text wrap / runaround). To set this to the much-improved InDesign text wrap method, go to the … (read more)

Moving Up the Charts

July 19th, 2006 | by Michael Murphy

The InDesigner has just squeezed into a first-page position among the featured Technology podcasts on the iTunes Music Store. I have no idea how iTMS ranks or tracks podcasts, but The InDesigner has been moving steadily up from its original positon on page 5 (of 7). It held fast at the first spot on page 2 until a few days ago, and just made its way up to the very last spot on the first page.

Not that I’ve been repeatedly going back to check or anything.
